One of the most memorable media visits that we went to while in London was Weber Shandwick. Personally, since I am a public relations major, this media visit really meant a lot to me.
I have always been so interested in public relations on a global spectrum, and how it operates differently than the conglomerates in America. It was such an honor to hear from the employees on how passionate they feel about their work, and how their work here is different than any other Weber Shandwick in the world.
There were several statements that stuck with me throughout the visit that I wrote down. All of these statements made me truly reflect on how passionate I was about public relations, and how I could use these words to inspire me and push me to be an even better public relations practitioner.
One of the statements that really stuck with me was: "Our ideas are designed to earn attention." This statement to me was so powerful, because in order to be successful in public relations, you have to let your ideas do some of the heavy lifting. If we can train ourselves to trust our creativity and let our ideas flow into a great concept, then we can learn exactly what it takes to earn an audiences attention.
Another statement that made be really just made me take a moment to think about was: "Create content with extraordinary truth to capture people's attention and inspire action." I think that the one thing people don't realize about public relations is that we do more than promote things. we research, we find what's good about a campaign, why people will benefit from this product and we promote it truthfully and skillfully in order to get people to make the move on through their own will. I really enjoyed that statement, because it truly is what makes public relations honest and exciting.
It was also so amazing to get the opportunity to hear from different professionals in different departments at Weber Shandwick. I think it's so important to not put yourself in a box and open yourself up to all possibilities when becoming a public relations professional, because you truly don't know where you are going to thrive best. It was such an honor to see the successful campaigns that these professionals had put together. it really inspired me to be able to present something like that someday.
I think my favorite part of the media visit was getting to pick the brain of each person from each department. They all had such different approaches to our questions, and each answer just felt so genuine and well thought out. I remember sitting their absorbing every piece of advice, and at the same time realizing that the opportunity we had been given to do this was extraordinary. I am so grateful to have gotten the chance to be in that room and be inspired for the future.
